What do we need to know about coughing?
Coughing is a natural protective reflection mechanism by which the body seeks to expel secretions from a respiratory tract or a foreign body. Respiratory tracts - throat, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, lung - are the door to many malignant microorganisms. Because of this, they are often the most affected by infectious agents. Cough occurs when irritating specific receptors in the airways that send nerve impulses to the brain that reacts by coughing as it tries to throw the irritating component out of the body.
When the body is healthy, the cough can successfully clear the respiratory system. In inflammation of the respiratory tract caused by influenza, cold and other viral or bacterial respiratory infections, the cough reflex is not sufficient to discard the collected secretions. Therefore, it is often necessary to use cushioning aids that soften and soothe irritation. The cough may be damp or dry:
In wet cough, secretion is formed that traps the pathogenic microorganisms that enter the respiratory tract. Through the movements of the epithelial cilia, this secretion moves upwards. Coughing out of the airways. In order to stop the infection and cough, the body has to be released from the accumulated secretion.
Dry cough is not associated with increased secretion. Most often it is accompanied by irritation of the receptors in the throat and pharynx, causing painful coughing. If the infection is deepened, the dry cough may go into moist. It can also be quite painful, as persistent unproductive coughing, irritating and scratching throat tighten the chest muscles and overwhelm the airways.
